Smegma isn't a particularly glamorous topic to have to learn about, but it's something that all men should know about it if they are to prevent any infections of the penis, maintain good penile health, and not offend any sexual partners they might encounter.

What is Smegma?

Most guys, and not a few girls, will be familiar with smegma. In fact, all men produce it; smegma is the build-up that develops beneath the foreskin. The skin is always producing it, and it becomes visible when it is allowed to develop when the penis goes unwashed. When smegma does become visible, it looks moist and white, and it usually forms into small balls that lie just under the foreskin. Smegma isn't anything to worry about; in fact, it's a necessary bodily product that is used to lubricate and moisten the penis. However, having too much of it can be a problem.

Why Should You Wash Away Smegma?

Many men don't bother to wash their penises. This can lead to a few problems, and an unhealthy build-up of smegma is just one of them.

A build-up of hardened smegma can give any bacteria beneath the foreskin an opportunity to breed. That's obviously something that no man will want, and it can lead to an increased risk of infection and disease. One of the most common inflammations that can occur is balanitis, sometimes referred to as balanoposthitis. This inflammation of the head of the penis can result in itching, swelling, and soreness; you may also develop a rash, experience discharge from beneath the foreskin, and find that it is painful when you urinate.

Smegma can also develop a very unpleasant aroma. Though typically possessing no smell, a build-up of smegma can develop a slightly cheesy aroma that can be off-putting. Coupled with the unpleasantness of the build-up itself, it should come as no surprise to learn that sexual partners will not be impressed.

How Should You Remove Smegma?

Now you understand what smegma is and what kind of problems it can help produce, you need to know how to manage it. Again, smegma is only a problem if a large amount is allowed to develop, so it isn't like you need to commit to hourly cleanings.

Instead, make sure you wash your penis once a day. All you need to use is warm water, so you can take care of things quickly in the shower. Just pull back the foreskin and gently rub. Once you're done, make sure you dry off thoroughly since excess moisture beneath the foreskin will encourage unhealthy growth.

About Me
How to Maintain and Improve Your Health

Hello! Welcome to my blog, my name is Brian. Ever since I was a boy, I have been interested in how the human body works. I would spend hours reading my dad's medical textbooks. My dad was a doctor at the local hospital so there was no shortage of information and equipment lying around our home. I read about all the different types of diseases and conditions which can affect the human body and I decided I would do my best to stay as healthy as possible. Although I didn't train as a doctor myself, I have a keen interest in health and medicine. I decided to start a blog to share my passion with the rest of the world.
